A portrait of Jane Winstone, a pioneering Kiwi avi A portrait of Jane Winstone, a pioneering Kiwi aviator, was unveiled in Whanganui by one of our very own members, Frances Barnes. (pictured on the right)

Jane Winstone, a Whanganui born and bred, flew solo at just 17 and then applied to the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) to contribute her efforts to the World War II. She was one of only 5 New Zealanders to serve in the ATA during WWII.  She tragically died in 1944, aged 31, when the engine of her Spitfire failed at 600ft. 

The NZAWA stands on the shoulders of giants like Jane Winstone!
