The New Zealand Association of Women in Aviation is an enthusiastic group that aims to foster networks, unity and sorority among women interested in aviation. Since 1960 we have been promoting and assisting women to undertake aviation activities and learning both within New Zealand and as representatives overseas.
Membership ranges from ages 2 to 92, from PPL student to ATPL captain, from balloonist to glider pilot to engineer, meteorologist, air traffic controller and all enthusiasts in between.

We hold an annual Rally during June at Queen’s Birthday Weekend at different locations, alternating between the North and South Islands across New Zealand. You would have the opportunity to fly-in for a memorable weekend of competition, education and friendship. There are competitions and awards for pilots at all levels of experience including fixed-wing, glider, helicopter and microlight aircraft pilots as well as for parachutists.
Rally and other events provide the opportunity to network within the industry socially and professionally – share experiences and advice with fellow aviators.
NZAWA provides three annual Awards to members (check them out here /link) as well as monetary support for international representation on a case by case basis. Current members receive a subsidy to attend Rally! Externally NZAWA provides awards to women via:
- Youth Glide New Zealand
- The Air Training Corps Association of New Zealand
- The Walsh Memorial Flying School through Scouts New Zealand
Flying in is a great opportunity to learn new skills, adventure through different terrain and enjoy camaraderie with like-minded enthusiasts. Learn from the experiences of others; safety and technical advice are readily available.
The Association is a member of The New Zealand Aviation Federation – they provide lobbying of government authorities on behalf of members’ interests.
Our amazing editors compile a bi-monthly newsletter packed with articles and photos covering a wide range of topics together with relevant industry information.
Need a place to stay while waiting out the weather? membership list, home stay options and mentoring information are proved in our annual Members’ Directory.
The aviation industry is constantly changing and The NZAWA has seen it through some big shifts. Thanks to the foresight or Rhona Fraser and our Foundation Members the Association has been there for it’s members. We have amazing resources and knowledge in our library and archives that members have access to.
The New Zealand Association of Women in Aviation is about championing it’s members and celebrating their successes and achievements. Tell us your stories, keep us informed via firstname.lastname@example.org or post to our Facebook group. We are fast approaching our 60th Anniversary, we’d love you to be here with us and continue to help us grow to support more women in aviation.
